Self-confidence
and Self-esteem
Studies show that martial arts programs are 10 times better for building
self-esteem than traditional team sports. Because karate can be done at an
individual pace, success comes from personal victories, not who scored and who
sat on the bench.
Students of all ages build self-esteem and confidence by meeting and
defeating obstacles and by growing with the martial arts.
When an adult goes from not being able to do one
pushup and two months later they can do twenty pushups, they feel better because
they know they've improved.
When a shy student learns to get up in front of
their class and perform their self-defense, they will have the confidence to get
up in front of their school mates and give a speech.
When an out of shape student loses ten pounds and can touch their toes for
the first time in years, their self-esteem rises.
When a bullied child feels that they can defend themselves if they have to,
they no longer live in fear.
Does confidence miraculously appear when you put on a karate outfit?
No.
Confidence and Self-esteem are developed through progressive training, reaching
goals and positive reinforcement.
Stress Relief
Usually we associate stress with adults. In today's high pressure society,
however, kids get stressed out too. Karate relieves stress through physical exercise. By kicking, punching and
hitting the heavy bag, students blow off steam.
Karate also clears your mind through concentration. If you're thinking about
the next self-defense move, you can't be thinking about your bad day at work or
at school. Karate doesn't solve your problems but it clears your mind so you can handle
your problems in a constructive manner.
While martial arts classes are serious, there is also room for having fun and
making friends. Your dojo-mates are there to support you in a positive manner.
Most people leave class with a smile on their faces.
Self-Defense Skills
Is your daughter going off to college?
Does your son have to deal with
bullies or gangs?
Does your spouse work late?
There are many reasons to want to empower yourself with self-defense skills.
We train all ages to deal with troublesome situations. Self-defense starts by
recognizing danger and avoiding it. If things escalate to violence we teach you
how to hit hard, hit fast and get away safely. You'll learn to fight standing
up, on the ground, in tight spaces like a car, against weapons and multiple
attackers. You'll learn striking, blocking, joint locks, throws, weapons and
ground work.
We teach you how to deal with attackers according to your age and physical
limitations. A bigger person may feel confident grappling with an attacker,
where a smaller person might choose a strike or a pressure point to fight off an
assailant. By the time you get your black belt we will have taught you how to
handle most types of confrontations.
Fitness
Perform a self-defense move twenty times and you'll be giving your heart and
lungs a great workout. Ten minutes hitting a heavy bag and your arms will be
stronger. Karate stretching will give you the flexibility of yoga, but with a
lot more kick. Karate gives you a well balanced conditioning program and unlike
aerobics or running, is easy on the knees.
Too many sports need expensive ice surfaces or you have to wait until it
snows or for a tee time. In many sports you're washed up and over the hill by
the age of eighteen. Karate is one of the few sports you can pursue for a
life-time. You can practice karate anywhere, on the beach or in your hotel room
on the road. You can practice in your back yard or your basement at anytime and
at any age.
